SOIL POLLUTION

What is soil pollution?

Soil pollution refers to anything that causes contamination of soil and degrades its quality which poses a high risk to our health and to our ecosystem. It occurs due to the rapid growth in industrial development, intensive agriculture, and other man-made activities.
Soil Pollution has become a major challenge for us that we need to address for establishing a healthier environment.

Methods to control Soil Pollution-

1. Plant Trees
The roots of the trees firmly hold on to the soil. As the roots of trees spread deep into the layers of soil, they hold it tightly, thus preventing soil erosion and pollution.

2. Plant a Rain Garden
A rain garden is a shallow depression in your yard which will collect precipitation washing over impervious surfaces. It prevents soil erosion and allows you to grow wetland plants.

3. Recycle
Recycling paper, plastic and other materials reduce the volume of waste in landfills. Use glass containers or other reuse containers.

4. Separate pits to dump waste
Designated pits should be used for the dumping of soil waste. These wastes should be treated separately as chemical or biological to make them less toxic and hazardous.

5. Reduce chemical fertilizers and pesticides use
Applying biofertilizers and natural manures which can help retain water to maintain soil fertility. Biological methods of pest control can also reduce the use of pesticides and thereby minimize soil pollution

6. Compost
Composting is an excellent way to recycle your kitchen’s waste material into the finest soil conservation you can find. It not only saves you from landfill but the composted waste feed your soil with lots of beneficial microorganisms. It also helps you to reduce plant diseases and improves soil drainage.

7. Practice crop rotation
Practicing crop rotation will help you keep your soil fertile and healthy. Different plants require different types of nutrients and attract different types of pests. That’s why smart gardeners remember to rotate their food crops each year so that the soil won’t lose all the nutrients and its fertility.

8. Use Soil Additives
Use soil additives such as lime and organic matter from composting, which can adjust soil pH to sustainable levels and reduce soil erosion and pollution.

9. Water the Soil timely
Watering soil is the perfect measure through which we can conserve soil. Watering the soil along with plants growing in it is a way to prevent soil erosion and pollution.

10. Community education and awareness
Last but not the least; the major point through which we can control soil pollution is proper education and awareness among people.

Let’s take a pledge to overcome soil pollution and make our environment safe and healthy.
